The process of surgical removal of a varicose vein is simple. It involves the use of certain medical equipments like an ultrasound machine, catheter, laser fiber or radiofrequency electrode, and laser or radiofrequency console. First, ultrasound is used to visualize the varicose vein and bring it up on the ultrasound monitor. Then, an endo-vascular optical fiber is inserted slowly into the vein via a catherter. Then, when the laser electrode reaches the desired location, it is used to heat up and shrink the defective vein tissues which gradually cause them to fade away.

During the procedure, the area of the leg where the procedure is to be performed is cleaned, shaved and numbed using topical anesthetic cream or a local anesthetic injection. The patient is made to wear surgical drapes.

The ultrasound process is performed by a trained inter-venal radiologist. The operation is done on an out-patient basis, rarely is admission required. There might be slight discomfort to the patient when anesthetics are being injected or when small surgical incisions are made to incert the catheter, but the actual laser treatment and shrinkage of the vein is painless. The operation is simple and is generally over within an hour.

A follow up ultrasound examination is essential in order to assess the treated vein and to check for adverse outcomes. Within one week, the target vein should be successfully closed. Additional procedures (such as sclerotherapy or phlebectomy) may be necessary to treat associated veins.

Endovenous laser treatment is presently reigning supreme when it comes to removal of varicose veins. In this procedure, an optical fibre is inserted into the vein to be treated, and through this channel a laser, which has its wavelength in the infrared spectrum, is transmitted to the blood and vein cells. This causes the vein to contract and slowly blocks blood circulation through it. Lack of circulation causes the vein to gradually degrade and decompose. While the laser is being transmitted, the optical fibre channel is intermittently withdrawn portion by portion.

EVLT (Endovenous Laser Treatment) is the same treatment as ELT but is a trademark name owned by Diomed and used as the name for their 910nm laser treatment unit for ELT. In a similar manner, many other medical corporations use trademark fibres of different and signature wavelengths. These varying wavelengths thought have but one aim, to maximise damage to the varicose vein while at the same time causing minimal damage to the adjoining tissues.

Though highly preferred and popular, this kind of laser treatment is not immune to side effects. After the procedure the patient is prone to express pain and itch in the operated area, which turns red. Cat-scratch appearance and swelling too are not very uncommon. But these symptoms rarely persist for more than a week or too, and if they do and scarring is observed, a revisit to the doctor’s clinic is advisable.

The medical and surgical field in India is a largely progressive sector. Cutting edge technology and state-of-the-art equipment is slowly but surely reaching the shores of the land which once relied on which-doctors and ayurveda for cure. Modern and up-to-date varicose and vein treatment facilities, likewise, are available all over India. A wide variety of treatments, including sclerotherapy, ablation, laser treatment or vein stripping, are all available locally anywhere in India.

When it comes to the well-known vein treatment centers in India, The Apollo chain of hospitals must be mentioned before any. Situated in all the major cities including Mumbai, Goa, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore, these chain of hospitals offer excellent treatment facilities, in terms of the best surgeons in the country and world class equipment. The Indrapastha Apollo Hospital in Delhi and the Apollo Gleneagles Hospital in Kolkata are the best among these chains.

Next mention should be made of the Wockhardt chain of hospitals and the Fortis Hospitals. These hospitals, too, offer highly satisfactory vein treatment facilities. Other than these chains, vein treatment is done in almost every small hospital, nursing home or outdoor clinics situated locally all over India. How good they are depend on the doctors there. Most people prefer to be operated in a known locality, at a known small hospital or clinic by their known and trusted doctor that go to the famous but unknown hospital chains.

Laser vein therapy or laser vein removal is common treatment for various abnormalities in the vein including the spider vein or varicose vein conditions. Expenses incurred to indergo this procedure vary according to the doctor or to the extent of procedure and medication undergone.
Laser vein treatment can be used to treat both varicose veins and spider veins, though intense light burst therapy is preferred in case of varicose veins because they are much larger in size. Laser treatment is extremely target specific, and so rarely affects any other region other than the desired one. Recovery time is minimal and most patients can rejoin normal activity immediately after the procedure. It is a cosmetic procedure that uses highly concentrated pulses of light beams to target the veins and destroys them. The result, though, is not immediate. After the surgery, the veins may look unchanged, but over a period of the next two to six weeks, they gradually turn dark blue, then red and slowly fade away into the skin to show the natural skin complexion.

Successive treatments, four to six weeks apart, are often required to completely erase the vein related problems because most that develop these abnormalities are susceptible to regular vascular problems.

Distinct facial spider veins and broken capillaries which are easy to target, are usually completely eliminated by only 1-2 treatments, leaving your skin with no evidence that you ever had any visible veins or capillaries. In a few cases, facial veins may turn slightly purple for a few days before they completely resolve (disappear). Though rare, in the case of a larger facial vein, a tiny indentation may appear where the vein collapses. With time, your skin will usually fill this indentation with beautiful new tissue.

Some more complex and multi-layered facial vascular conditions (such as rosacea, matted broken capillaries and leg veins) are also significantly improved with one spider vein treatment. However, the more complex broken capillaries and spider veins often require 2-4 follow up treatments in order to dramatically reduce or completely eliminate them.
