Compression stockings are specialised stockings that are worn to prevent poor blood circulation in the legs. Compression stockings are worn from the toes to the knee or sometimes to the top of the leg. These elasticized stockings are worn all day. Compression stockings steadily squeeze the legs, helping veins and leg muscles move blood more efficiently so it is more difficult for blood clots to form. Compression stockings improve circulation of blood and are a mainstay of treatment for varicose veins that are causing symptoms.
Wearing compression tockings, socks, hosiery or maternity/pregnancy garments can help you prevent or slow down the progression of vein problems and diseases. They prevent the pooling of blood in the veins and reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis & varicose vein in the legs. These compression garments are medically effective therapies for a variety of vein problems and circulation-related conditions, including aching, tired, heavy legs, leg/ankle swelling (edema), varicose veins, and spider veins.
Compression stockings are sold at most pharmacies and medical supply stores. You may buy special compression stockings which are tighter at the feet and get looser as they go up (graduated compression) at a medical supply store (with a doctor’s prescription).
